Title: CPS: Increasing Classroom Participation via Technology
1CPS Increasing Classroom Participation via
Technology
- Cathy W. Hall
- East Carolina University
- Paper presented at National Social Science
Association Meeting, October 13-15, 2004 - Baltimore, Maryland
2Research shows that QUESTIONING can improve
learning environment by 150
- Engages learner
- Focuses learner on specific objectives
- Helps learner practice retrieval/application of
info - Provides feedback on why learner missed question
- Provides opportunity for repetition
3The CPS Classroom What Do You Need?
- The Teachers Computer
- Student Response Pad to Communicate with
Teachers Computer - Software Interface
4The CPS Software Interface Supports
- Simple questioning capabilities for involving all
students - Feedback mechanism for providing students with
knowledge that their answers have been received - Feedback mechanism denoting class results for
each question - Absolute capture of individual results
- Delivery and capture of student performance on
traditional paper tests
5Benefits of the CPS System
- Real-time response
- Instant feedback
- Total participation
- Auto grading
- Accountability
- Interaction
6CPS Benefits
- Remediation
- Communication
- Competition
- Collaboration
- Anonymity
7How Can CPS be Used?
- Class Participation
- Challenge Board
- Fast Grade
- Presentations
- Lectures
- Class Attendance
8How Use continued
- Surveys
- Diagramming
- Pop Quizzes
- Exams
9- The CPS system is a practical and effective
educational technique. As a grading tool it
provides feedback on every question, and
assessments are immediately graded.
10The CPS system offers many advantages. Unlike
using PDAs in a classroom to achieve similar
results, you dont have to worry about
complimentary platforms, students sending
non-class related messages, and high costs.
11-Constructed by teacher on the spot and
verbalized to the
class-Written on board by teacher-Referenced by
teacher from any printed material-Constructed by
students or teams of students-Pre-developed by
teacher and projected to class by CPS
Questions Can Be
12Student Survey Results
- 1. How comfortable did you feel participating in
this class this semester? CPS gt control - 2. How effective were the questions posed in
class in helping you focus on relevant material?
CPS gt control - 3. How likely were you to ask questions over
material you did not fully understand in class?
CPS control
13Survey Results cont
- 4. How much of an active participant did you
feel you were in class? CPS gt control - 5. How easy was it to focus your attention on
material being covered in class? - CPS control
- 6. How much interest would you have in taking a
class (taking another class) that used technology
to encourage class participation? CPS gt control
14Survey Results cont
- 7. How comfortable do you feel in using (CPS)
technology? CPS gt control - 8. Would you view an extra 4-7 in course
material costs reasonable to have technology
included in your classes? CPS control
15Student Satisifaction CPS
- _4_strongly agree _3_agree _2_disagree
_1_strongly disagree - 1. I was satisfied with the technology used in
the class. X 3.65 - 2. This course used classroom technology very
effectively. X 3.58 - 3. I would be likely to take another course that
uses this type of classroom technology. X 3.46 - 4. In this class, the technology helped to
increase my class participation. X 3.62 - 5. In this class, the technology helped me earn
a higher grade. X 3.35
16Does CPS improve grades?
- The grades from two classes were compared one
class used CPS system and other did not. The
classes covered the same material and test
questions. Even though students felt the
technology had helped them achieve a higher
grade, there was not a statistically significant
difference between the grades in the two classes

18Discussion of Results
- While no significant difference was found for
grades based on CPS vs. non-CPS class, student
attitude did show significantly higher course
ratings for CPS section. - Getting students actively involved in the
classroom environment IS an important step in
promoting active learning! - On-going research on the benefits (motivational
and educational) of technology in the classroom
is needed.
