Main Features of the South Gas Region

• Three countries involved France, Portugal and
  Spain.
• A significant gas market with a consumption of
  nearly 80 billion cubic meters/year 1 (17 of
  the EU25)
• It contributes to the security of supply in
  Europe by means of diversification
• Main entries for the natural gas coming from the
  north of Africa
• LNG, from a variety of origins, has an important
  role in the supplies (87 of LNG supplied to EU25
  enters via this region).

The Action Plan of the South Gas Region

• The Action Plan (published on www.ergeg.org)
  covers work and actions to be undertaken in the
  region in the next two years. Five priorities
  were identified
• Interconnection capacity
• Interoperability
• Transparency
• Implementation of the Directive - market opening
• Development of hubs

Main results - the next six months

• Interconnection capacity. Study (May) on future
  interconnection infrastructure needs for the
  period (2007-2015). This will allow decisions on
  further actions to enable new infrastructure
  projects develop in practice, and on further
  actions to manage possible congestions.
• Interoperability. Study to identify the main
  interoperability problems - IG will then develop
  an action to solve the concrete interoperability
  obstacles identified by June 2007.
• Transparency. Study on transparency and further
  capacity needs. Results and action plan to solve
  problems by summer 2007.
