The Data Protection Act 1984
People were worried about their personal privacy,
so the government issued the data protection act
in 1984. The act provides rights for individuals
and demands good information handling
practice. The act gives individuals rights but
requires people who use their personal
information on a computer to follow proper
practices.

The Data Protection Principles
  • The data protection act includes protection
    principles. Which are principles that have to be
    followed. These are
  • Fairly and lawfully processed
  • Processed for limited purposes
  • Adequate, relevant and not excusive
  • Accurate
  • Not keep longer than necessary
  • Processed in accurate accordance with the data
    subject rights
  • Secure
  • Not transfer to countries without adequate
    protection

Useful Definitions
Personal data information about living
identifiable individuals. Personal data does not
have to be particular information and can be as
little as a name or address. Automatically
processed data that is processed by computer.
It doesnt cover manual files. Data Users a
company who control a collection of data and put
it to use. Data Subjects the individuals to
whom the personal data relates.

The Data Protection Registrar
  • The Data Protection Act established the office of
    Registrar. Being a Registrar this means that they
    have duties here are some of them
  • Maintaining a register of data users and computer
    bureaux and making it publicly available.
  • Disseminating information on the Act and how it
    works.
  • Promoting compliance with the Data Protection
    Principles
  • Encouraging the development of Codes of practice
    to help data users to comply with the Principles.
  • Considering complaints about breaches of the
    Principles or the Act.
  • Prosecuting offenders, or serving notices on
    those who are contravening the Principles.

Exemptions from the Act
  • There are some exemptions from the act, however
    there are also are exemptions for special
    categories. Here are some of the exemptions
  • The act does not apply to payroll, pensions and
    accounts data, nor to names and addresses held
    for distribution purposes
  • Registration may not be necessary when the data
    are for personal, family, household or
    recreational use
  • Subjects do not have a right to access data if
    the sole aim of collecting it is for statistical
    or research purposes, or where it is simply for
    backup
  • Data can be disclosed to the data subjects
    agent, to persons working for the data user, and
    in response to urgent need to prevent injury or
    damage to health.
