AUSTRALIAN ABORIGINES
Australian Aborigines have been here with their
culture, languages and territories for more than
50,000 years. This map shows the various tribal
and language groups that existed before white
settlement.
4
CAPTAIN COOK
Captain Cook was instructed to search for land
and negotiate a treaty with the indigenous
people. He failed to do this and claimed the land
by raising the British flag in 1770.
5
The First Fleet
On the 26th of January, 1788 the first British
fleet landed and established base at Port
Jackson, near Sydney. Eleven ships carrying
convicts and soldiers with their families
started the first settlement.
6
INTRODUCED SPECIES
Under Govenor Phillip, new plants and animals
were introduced to Australia which competed with
native plants and animals.
7
MELBOURNE
Fifteen years after the first settlement near
Sydney, white explorers came to the river that
they now call the Yarra. They explored it and
went away again. In 1835, John Batman came to
settle. He gave the Aborigines some presents and
said that he had bought the land from them. This
site became Melbourne. The colony of Victoria was
established on the 1st of July 1851.
8
IMMIGRATION
The successful farming of sheep, cattle and
wheat, together with the availability of land,
brought many more new immigrants to the colonies.
9
GOLD RUSH -EUREKA
Goldfields were established at Ballarat. The
growing colonies experienced further growth when
numerous discoveries of gold brought a rush of
hopeful immigration from countries including
China and Britain. In 1854 miners rebelled
against unfair laws and fought with soldiers at
Eureka stockade.
10
SIX COLONIES OF AUSTRALIA
By 1901, six colonies existed. Each colony was
like a different country with its own laws, its
own leaders and even its own army and navy. In
1901, which was 100 years ago, they all joined
together to make a single nation, Australia.
Australias first parliament met on the 9th of
May,1901, in Melbourne.
11
EDMUND BARTON AUSTRALIA'S FIRST PRIME MINISTER

nation,Australia, I am committed to a country
which can defend itself in need, trade with the
world to create wealth for toil and
practice democracy for all whites, including
