What is a Dominion?
A Self Governing Territory owing allegiance to
the British king or queen.

Canada
  • Three types of people French, Immigrant British,
    American Loyalists
  • Brittan gained control of Quebec after victory in
    the French and Indian War.
  • French peoplewere angry at theinflux of
    Britishimmigrants.

Constitutional Act of 1791
  • Divided Quebec into two colonies Upper and Lower
    Canada.
  • Lower Canada remained French-speaking
  • Upper Canada became English
  • Each colony had an law-making assembly
  • Solved the diversity problem in Canada

Canadian Self Government
  • British sent Lord Durham to investigate the
    conflict in Canada
  • 1867, British pass the North America Act
    establishing Canada as a dominion.
  • All parts of Canada were joined into a
    confederation called the Dominion of Canada
  • The Modern nation of Canada is modeled after this
    system

Expanding Canadian Territory
  • 1869, the dominion acquired the Northwest
    Territory which extended west across the Arctic
    wilderness.
  • The Mounted Police was created to maintain a
    favorable relationship between the Native
    Americans and the Canadian Settlers

  • Originally a prisoners colony to relieve the
    overcrowded British jails.
  • The aborigines, the indigenous people of
    Australia clashed with the Europeans
  • Australia became a dominion in 1901

New Zealand
  • James Cookes expedition settled in 1790.
  • Foreigners clashed with the inhabitants known as
    the Maori.
  • Treaty of Waitangi in 1840 protected Maori
    rights.
  • New Zealand economy based on wool exports to
    British markets
  • Discovery of gold brought new settlers, increased
    tension with natives once more

Revolt in France
  • 1815, the Congress of Vienna restored the Bourbon
    monarchy under Louis XVII
  • Charles X restored monarchie absolut in 1824,
    supported by ultraloyalists
  • Was opposed by liberals, so Charles passed the
    July Ordinances to dissolve the assembly, and
    restrict voting rights
  • Citizens revolted and following Les Trois
    Glorieuses, they forced Charles to abdicate the
    throne

Louis Phillipe
  • Louis Phillipe, won the favor of the
    middle-class, and became known as Citizen-King
  • The French became disheartened with Louis because
    at heart he favored the wealthy
  • The Revolution of 1848 included violent protests
    against the monarch and ending with Louis fleeing
    to Great Britain.
  • French citizens proclaimed the country a republic

The Second Empire
  • New constitution created a legislative branch
    called the National Assembly
  • The new system saw an overwhelming majority elect
    Louis-Napoleon president
  • Louis-Napoleon portrayed himself as a reformer,
    but used his new founded power to assume the role
    of emperor
  • Louis-Napoleon restricted press and civil
    liberties but created a healthy economy that saw
    a doubling of the GDP during his reign

Crimean War
  • France and Russia argued over the right to
    protect Christians in the empire of visiting the
    Holy lands.
  • Angered, Russia decided to seize French ally, the
    Ottoman Empires territory in the Balkans
  • Great Britain sided with France to protect Middle
    Eastern trade interests
  • Treaty of Paris in 1856 ended the conflict

End of the Empire
  • Prussias growing power in the 1860s caused
    Napoleon III to declare war
  • The Prussians dominated a French Army that was
    slow to mobilize and captured Napoleon III after
    only 6 weeks
  • The subsequent collapse of the Empire saw the
    creation of a New Assembly
  • The Assembly seeded the provinces of Alsace and
    Lorraine to Prussia and paid 5 billion francs

The Commune of Paris
  • During the revolt, workers established a
    Socialist government known as the Commune of
    Paris.
  • A civil war broke out between the Commune and the
    Assembly.
  • The conflict saw over 20,000 deaths, and set
    political development back years

The Third Republic
  • New Constitution created a bicameral legislature
    and a governing body in the form of a cabinet of
    ministers

Threats to the Republic
  • General Georges Boulanger launched a campaign to
    overthrow the legislature and won support from
    royalists
  • The government quelled the uprising and Boulanger
    fled to Belgium
  • The Panama Company collapsed causing a financial
    crisis in France
  • The result was the election of 50 socialists to
    the national legislature, and increased
    regulation on international finance

The Dreyfus Affair
  • Alfred Dreyfuss, convicted of selling military
    secrets to the Germans was banished to Devils
    Island
  • Later it was discovered that documents had been
    forged and Dreyfuss was actually innocent
  • A presidential pardon released Dreyfuss, but the
    affair caused a division among citizen who
    distrusted the government.
  • The resolution of this problem proved the
    government was capable of overcoming adversity
