Learning strategies
  • Techniques or principles that enable a student to
    learn to solve problems, read, communicate, and
    organize independently
  • Teach strategies to the entire class and with
    additional practice exceptional students will
    also be able to participate
  • Special needs students may also require learning
    strategies that there peers already have acquired
  • More contact with you or the EA in a small group
    / individual basis

Planning prior to teaching a strategy
  • Identify areas in which many students could be
    working more independently
  • Specify outcomes U would like to see
  • List the steps the students should follow
  • Limit the number of steps
  • Put the strategy on the board , on walls of the
    classroom and or on cue cards

Model strategy use carefully
  • Students will use the strategy only as well as U
    explain it
  • Think out loud, work through why UR doing what is
    happening, demonstrate to the students the
    process
  • Make the invisible learning strategies visible
  • Get the students to demonstrate what the strategy
    is that U just taught

  • Students are prompted to go through each step
  • Use visuals / prompts to demonstrate each step
  • Have the students pair up and work through the
    strategies together
