Battery life definition and usage models
  • Goals
  • Define and agree on upcoming/emerging mobile PC
    usage models
  • Define and agree on battery life definition and
number of hours for a given year in number of
hours or a different metric( 8 hours for 2004, 12
hours for 2005, or a different metric, etc.)
  • Work with benchmarking organizations to help
create accurate battery life benchmarks and
create awareness among consumers and enterprise
    buyers
  • Deliverables
  • Publish battery life definition and yearly
targets agreed to by the group
  • Publish usage model research results. (Conducted
    by group members or sponsored.)
  • Proliferate the usage models to benchmarking
    organizations for benchmark development i.e.
ensure development of benchmarks that reflect
    these usage models
  • Develop and publish guidelines on Battery Life
metric usage that is widely adopted and used
consistently and uniformly by the industry

4
Component and subsystem power consumption
guidelines
  • Goals
  • Provide power measurement and power-saving
guidelines to the suppliers of components and
    subsystems for the mobile PC.
  • Initial focus is the display and storage
    subsystem
  • Deliverables
  • Publish display brightness guidelines based on(
end user market research, OEM/Panel maker
surveys, other) and develop consensus among EBL
WG member companies for the same.
  • Publish display power measurement guidelines and
develop consensus among EBL WG member companies
    for the same.
  • Develop consensus among group members towards the
goal of delivering 3W display for 2004/2005 Thin
    and Light mobile PCs
  • Demonstrate power savings realized through use of
matched inverter/panel for Thin and Light mobile
    PCs and publish results.
  • Develop matched inverter/panel proposal/guideline
and develop consensus among EBL WG member
    companies for the same
  • Develop HDD roadmap with a focus on reduced power
    consumption

5
Power sources
  • Goals
  • Identify new sources of power for the mobile PC
and ensure adequate eco system and regulatory
    support.
  •
  • Deliverables
  • Identify/research and develop "realistic" micro
fuel cell power sources roadmap for mobile PC
  • Identify/research regulatory roadmap as well as
eco system development roadmap for micro fuel
    cell.
  • Develop and deliver specification for mobile PC
fuel containers ( universal fuel cartridge)

6
Power management profiles
  • Goals
  • Develop guidelines for easy to use, intuitive
    power management profiles/mechanisms.
  • Deliverables
  • Identify and document the limitations of existing
power management profiles in mobile PCs.
  • Research possible solutions and develop
    guidelines.
