Title: Our Rocky World

1
Our Rocky World
2
The Earth is made up of three basic types of
rocks.
  • Sedimentary
  • Igneous
  • Metamorphic

3
Minerals
  • These types of rocks are all made of different
types of minerals. Minerals are things found in
nature and are not man made.

Igneous Rock
  • Igneous rocks are called fire rocks and are
formed either underground or above ground.
Underground, they are formed when the melted
rock, called magma, deep within the earth becomes
trapped in small pockets. As these pockets of
magma cool slowly underground, the magma becomes
    igneous rocks.

6
Igneous Rock
  • Igneous rocks are also formed when volcanoes
erupt, causing the magma to rise above the
earth's surface. When magma appears above the
earth, it is called lava. Igneous rocks are
formed as the lava cools above ground.

Sedimentary Rock
  •   A sedimentary rock can be formed from many
things. They can be formed from layers of other
rocks, dead plants, animals, or sand. The grains
are where the layers were formed. The layers have
to be pushed together very tightly.

Sedimentary Rocks
  • You could find sedimentary rocks near water. If
you go to a lake and try to skip a rock it most
likely is a sedimentary rock. They are the ones
that usually are stuck in sediment.     If you
look closely on a sedimentary rock you'll see
smaller rocks inside. 70 of rocks are
    sedimentary rocks.

Coal

Metamorphic Rock
  • Metamorphic rocks are rocks that have "morphed"
into another kind of rock. These rocks were once
igneous or sedimentary rocks. How do sedimentary
and igneous rocks change? The rocks are under
tons and tons of pressure, which fosters heat
build up, and this causes them to change. If you
exam metamorphic rock samples closely, you'll
discover how flattened some of the grains in the
    rock are.

Rock Cycle
  • The rock cycle is an ongoing process where rocks
form and change into other types of rocks. Rocks
are always changing. Minerals that make up rocks
are always being shifted around by the
environment. Some rocks turn into entirely new
rocks! The rock cycle never stops!
