Write Clauses
  • A clause is a group of words with its own subject
    and verb. There are two kinds of clauses.
  • An independent (main) clause is the heart of a
    sentence all sentences must contain at least
    one. An independent clause can stand alone as a
    sentence because it expresses a complete idea.

Independent clauses
  • The thunder boomed.
  • The waiter is polite.
  • Each of these independent clauses has a subject
    thunder, waiter.
  • Each has a verb boomed, is.
  • Each expresses a complete thought.
  • Therefore, each is a sentence.

AVOID FUSED SENTENCES
  • A fused sentence , also called a run-on sentence,
    joins two independent (main) clauses without a
    conjunction and/or proper punctuation.
  • A fused sentence combines two complete sentences
    without indicating where one stops and the other
    begins.
