Title: CORROSION UNDER INSULATION CUI Inspection Process Overview

1
CORROSION UNDER INSULATION (CUI Inspection
Process Overview)
  • Perform temperature surveys at TML holes for all
insulated equipment within each Unit and pipe
    rack.
  • Visually inspect insulation during temp survey
and ID damaged areas, mastic wrap, any items
protruding through insulation jacketing such as
    bleeders, piping supports, etc.
  • Items 300F and less are surveyed with backscatter
    equipment.
  • From backscatter survey, ID areas for insulation
    removal.

2
Neutron Backscatter Overview
  • Neutron backscatter operates by emitting
neutrons into the equipment being tested. The
higher energy neutrons are moderated by collision
with hydrogen atoms in trapped moisture within
    the insulation (fireproofing). These moderated
neutrons are then counted. Wet insulation will
produce a higher count per unit of time than dry
    insulation.

3
Neutron Backscatter Influence Variables
  • Time of shot count
  • Insulation type and thickness
  • Humidity levels (2ft radius of influence)
  • Hydrocarbon levels (2ft radius of influence)
  • Shot location and number of shots taken
  • Accessibility of Equipment Piping
  • Equipment orientation (small vs. large)

4
CUI Program Statistical Data
  • 76.8 of areas stripped active corrosion was
    found.
  • 10 of areas stripped have active corrosion
    severe enough for replacement.
  • 27 recorded shots per/100 ft.
  • Number of insulated equipment average per unit
    (15)
  • Approximately 1100 recordable shots taken per 15
pieces of insulated equipment and associated
    piping.
  • Between 5K and 9K per 15 pieces of equipment
    and associated piping

MISSION STATEMENT
  • Advanced Corrosion Technologies Training
L.L.C. is on a mission to become the first
Technology and Training driven organization to
implement a proactive methodology in determining
areas of corrosion mechanisms before they become
issues. We are a company of Ideas, Experience,
and Integrity which allows us to be a leader in
the inspection technology and training industry.
The success of our efforts will be directly
driven by the employees who perform the work and
invent the ideas. EMAT technology is first in a
series of inspection methods and tools that will
lead us in becoming a pioneer in Advanced
    Corrosion Detection and Prevention.
