Caveats
  • A variety of institutional changes will likely
    change the role of global health at AECOM in the
    next years.
  • In five minutes, I can only touch on the
    curricular highlights. There are many research,
    academic and fellowship programs that I will not
    mention.

Mission Statement (edited)
  • Education, the goal of the Global Health Alliance
    (GHA) is to raise global awareness among students
    and faculty, enhance cultural sensitivity, and
    create interest in global health careers.
  • Capacity-building, the goal of the GHA is to
    assist in the development of the scientific,
    educational and clinical potential of academic
    institutions and communities in the developing
    world.
  • Advocacy/Communication, the GHA takes a strong
    stand for social justice globally through our
    work as physicians, educators and scientists.

Guatemala
  • Collaboration x 10 years with a major AIDS clinic
    in Guatemala City.
  • 10 Einstein students, many studied Spanish prior
    to working in the clinic.
  • Exposure to both clinical and social aspects of
    AIDS.
  • Involvement in research projects one published
    paper, another submitted, several in process
    several posters.

    clinical, academic, advocacy, teaching.

Lessons learned
  • Students have often taken the lead in promoting
    global health involvement and learning.
  • Evaluating the impact of global health programs
    has been problematic.
  • We need to approach working overseas with
    humility.
  • Future endeavors involvement w/ ELAM
