Arizona Wind Resource Potential
  • Wind Mapping
  • August 2003 - 1st High Resolution Wind Power Maps
    (DOE, APS, TEP SRP funded)
  • Developed by TrueWind Solution, validated by NREL
and reviewed by APS, TEP SRP
  • Mean annual seasonal wind speeds _at_ 30, 50, 70
    and 100 meters

5
Arizona Wind Resource Potential
  • Wind Mapping
  • Wind power density at 50 meters
  • Validated by 50 measurement stations 30 year
historical upper atmosphere and ground surface
    data
  • Margin of error 10 speed and
  • 20 power

Arizonas Wind Resource Potential
  • Wind Maps represent regional information not
    micrositing
  • Wind data shows good potential for load-following
    resource
  • Major resource areas (Gray Mountain, Kingman and
    Springerville) have significant transmission

12
Development Activities
  • Half dozen projects are in various development
    stages
  • Wind monitoring is being conducted on private and
    public lands
  • Transmission availability and adequacy is being
    studied

13
Development Activities
  • NAU RD
  • Anemometer loan program
  • Wind mapping service
  • Evaluating the Most Promising Sites for Wind
Energy Development in Arizona, Acker, Norman,
    Duque 2004
  • Findings Levelized bus bar cost of energy for
three selected Arizona sites is 4.21 (class 5)
    -5.04 (class 3) cents/kWh without transmission,
ancillary services or Production Tax Credit

14
Interwest Energy AllianceProposal
  • Interwest Energy Alliance Letter of February 25,
    2004
  • Interwest Energy Alliance recommends that the
    Arizona Corporation Commission increase its
commitment to renewable energy significantly by
implementing a 1,000 MW Renewable Energy
Portfolio Standard, without a surcharge, for
    eligible renewable energy technologies.

15
Conclusions
  • Arizona has complete statewide mapping for wind
    resources
  • Maps demonstrate a significant developable wind
    resource with access to transmission
  • There is considerable micrositing being conducted
    in the state
  • Active competition among developers will create
    lower prices
  • Costs are declining and technology is improving
for slow speed wind (class 3)

16
Conclusions
  • Developers will build projects in state due to
    Arizonas large market (population and
    electricity demand) and load growth
  • 1,000 MW of wind development
  • 1 billion in investment
  • Significant resources of wind and other renewable
technologies existing in Arizona that can provide
    large portion of CRRES
