- One day a manager, Max, complained that the lead
worker in the unit hed just taken over was being
difficult making a lot of mistakes, not
following up on commitments, etc. He said, When
I applied for the job in the unit, my reservation
was that I'd had no experience with their
processes. The hiring manager assured me that I
would learn quickly enough and that the lead
worker was a gem and would get me through. - Based on our conversation, Max took action, and
this is what happened. "We had a sit-down and I
talked to her about her work. She said, Max, you
probably don't know that I was an applicant for
your position and didn't get it. That was the
third time I'd applied for a supervision job and
been turned down. - Max asked if she'd gotten any feedback on why she
wasn't selected. She said, Never. So he asked
if she still wanted to be a supervisor. She said
she did. So he told her that he was going to set
up three appointments for her to get feedback
from the three hiring managers she'd dealt with.
We'll do some role-play rehearsing so you'll
feel comfortable with the questions you need to
ask. Then we'll see what needs to be done. If
there is more experience or training you need,
I'll work that out with you. And when the next
opportunity comes along, we'll do some more
role-playing for the interview if you think that
would be helpful. - Max was suddenly aware that she was crying. I'm
sorry, he said. Did I say something that
offended you? - She said, No. Not at all. It's that I've worked
here for twelve years and you're the first person
who's ever taken an interest in what I wanted to
do with my career.
