Title: The Seven Ages of Man

1
The Seven Ages of Man by William
Shakespeare This is really part of a play, but
people liked it so much we read it separately.
2
  • All the world's a stage,And all the men and
    women merely players
  • just a
  • metaphor

3
They have their exits and entrances,And one man
in his time plays many parts,His acts being
seven ages. This just means that one person
will be several different things/ people in his
or her lifetime.
4
  • At first the infant,Mewling and puking in the
    nurse's arms.
  • This is just as nasty as it sounds...

BARF!
5
  • Then, the whining schoolboy with his satchelAnd
    shining morning face, creeping like
    snailUnwillingly to school.

NO!!!
6
  • And then the lover,Sighing like furnace, with a
woeful balladMade to his mistress' eyebrow.

7
  • Then a soldier,Full of strange oaths, and
    bearded like the pard,

I CUSS A LOT!
8
  • Jealous in honour, sudden, and quick in
    quarrel,Seeking the bubble reputationEven in
    the cannon's mouth.

Im stupid brave!
9
  • And then the justiceIn fair round belly, with
good capon lin'd,With eyes severe, and beard of
    formal cut,

10
  • Full of wise saws, and modern instances,And so
    he plays his part.

Im important and have lots of helpful things to
say!
11
  • The sixth age shiftsInto the lean and slipper'd
pantaloon,With spectacles on nose, and pouch on
side,His youthful hose well sav'd, a world too
wide,For his shrunk shank, and his big manly
    voice,Turning again towards childish treble,
    pipesAnd whistles in his sound.

12
What does all of that mean?
pantaloons
spectacles
youthful hose
childish treble
pipes
whistles
13
  • Last scene of all,That ends this strange
eventful history,Is second childishness and mere
    oblivion,
  • What are we talking about here?

14
  • Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans
    everything.

15
So what is the point?
  • Why, Shakespeare?

16
  • Just for fun
  • The Seven Ages of Man
