Title: Wireless Technologies and Beyond

1
Wireless Technologies and Beyond
  • Angela Lokie

2
History
  • ATT developed an analog version for commercial
use in 1983 (before the divestiture)
  • The first system actually was developed in
Chicago/Baltimore and was thought to be able to
    serve 1 million customers.
  • By 1998, the system expanded and was serving 50
    million customers

3
  • Originally operating the 800 MHz analog system is
    AMPS.
  • The AMPS are not defined as a single standard.
  • The standards are developed by the TR-45
    committee within the Telecommunication Industry
    Association (TIA).

4
  • The standards that TIA has placed has made
    possible
  • automatic roaming
  • call delivery
  • short message delivery

5
  • It has expanded to include TDMA and CDMA for
digital operation and more recently into the
1800-2200 MHz frequency band for PCS.

6
Other forms of cellular and PCS in the world
  • GSM The European 900 mhz digital cellular
system, that has expanded to other parts of the
world. AMPS and GSM phones are incompatible. GSM
is the biggest competitor to the AMPS family of
    technologies.

7
  • NMT A Scandinavian 450/900 MHz analog system. It
was the closest thing to a standard prior to GSM.
These systems will be eventually obsolete.
  • TACS/ETAC AMPS with a few minor changes,
operating on 900 MHz frequency band. The largest
network is located in the UK.

8
PCS Personal Communications Systems
  • Wireless systems that are starting to operate in
    the 1800MHz frequency band.
  • Originally developed to be different the
    cellular better, cheaper, simpler.

9
Future GPRS
  • GPRS is a data network being developed alongside
BT Cellnets existing digital GSM network.
  • It uses existing radio base stations linked to a
new network based on packet technology.

10
GPRS
  • The network would only be utilized when data is
being transmitted, although the user would
maintain a virtual connection to their computer
    network throughout the day.
  • Presently calls are circuit switched
  • GPRS through packet technology a user would log
    into a data network.

11
(No Transcript)
12
  • From the data network- typically a company LAN or
Internet Service Provider, would send and receive
as and when required throughout the day.

GPRS Services Available
  • mobile office, expected to be the most popular,
users can access their company Intranet for
sending and receiving e-mail while out of the
    office.
  • Other business tailoring.
  • For the customer, the Internet browsing will
    become fast, simple and commonplace.

15
Benefits to GPRS
  • always connected to data network
  • High speed transmission.
  • More efficient.
  • New and innovative price structuring.
  • Based upon Internet Protocol (IP).

16
Where will GPRS be available?
  • UK on BT Cellnets existing stations.

17
In the News
  • Sprint PCS and Amazon.com have teamed up to offer
wireless shopping with their Net-ready cellular
    phones.
  • Customers would be able to shop online for books,
videos, and music from their PCS phone.

18
  • Net-ready phones are expected to have 48 million
users by 2002, and 204 million users by 2005.
