1.1 NATIONAL LIBRARIES IN A NEW
ENVIRONMENT

• traditional role of collecting, organising,
  storing, preserving and making available national
  heritage extends to electronic environment
• problems and challenges explosion of
  e-publishing, specific features of the material

2. SERIALITY 2.1 old definition

• a publication, in any medium, issued in
  successive parts, usually having numerical or
  chronological designations and intended to be
  continued indefinitely (ISO 3297)
• revisions of the existing standards (AACR2,
  ISBD(S), ISSN and MARC 21, UNIMARC etc.)

2.2 New definitions

• Continuing resource A bibliographic resource
  that is issued over time, usually with no
  predetermined conclusion. Continuing resources
  include serials and ongoing integrating
  resources.
• Serial A continuing resource in any medium,
  issued in a succession of discrete parts, usually
  bearing numbering, and usually having no
  predetermined conclusion.

• Formal criteria
• continuing resource issued in a succession of
  discrete parts and/or regularly updated over a

• has imprint or its equivalent
• bears numbering or chronological
• designations, and/or update statement
• is regularly updated
• has a stable title
• stable URL or one that can be traced by
• available software solutions

3.3 SELECTION CRITERIA...

• Criteria according to content
• - similarly to print resources (i.e. material
  having national significance)

3.4 RESOURCES EXCLUDED

• following types of resources are not being
  catalogued as serials
• - only table of contents and/or abstracts
• - copies of only one print issue, an
  article etc.

3.5 ONE BIBLIOGRAPHIC RECORD OR TWO?

• NUL two separate records for titles existing
  both in print and electronic medium linked with
  the UNIMARC field 452 (Another edition in other
  media)
• NUL - access for users to Internet serials
  through the library catalogue (WebPAC)

  continuing resources in the national bibliography
  
• consider criteria for analytical bibliographic
  processing of electronic continuing resources
  (i.e. article level)
• consider acquisition, access, archiving ...
