• Beeston Castle how old you are!
• Every wall crumbling,
• Every door closed,
• Secrets never sold,
• Tales never told.

Diary Entry Of Kathleen Howard

• Dear Diary,
• My name is Kathleen Howard. I have worked in
  Beeston Castle for over 9 years. I started to
  work here two years after this castle was built.
  My job is clothes making. I make clothes for the
  rich and receive very little money. My father is
  a stable managerlooking after the horses and
  stables. My mother passed away three years ago
  when I was at the age of 14. My brother James is
  not here right now he is fighting a war for our
  country.

Beeston Castle

• Beeston Castle was built by Ranulf, the 6th
  Earl of Chester in 1225, following his return
  from the crusades. It was seized by King Henry
  III in 1237, and remained in royal ownership
  until the 16th century. During the civil war
  (1642-46), the Castle was held in turn by
  Parliamentarians and Royalists, and played a
  prominent role in the fighting in this part of
  Cheshire.

Little Moreton Hall- Diary
12th September 1562 Dear diary, Today
its Little Moreton Halls 3rd birthday. The
master of the house wanted a party, so all of us
maids had to prepare tons of food and set out the
tables in the great hall. There was dancing and
music we listened but did not dance for we had
to eat our supper of pea soup on the mound .
After supper we headed for bed but the master
called us to tidy up the great hall . I had to
put Sandy, the guard dog, out side. Lady Sarah
came out telling me how good the food was, just
trying to make me jealous. Then she returned
inside and ordered Joe to wash the pots. We got
to bed at 230am. Then we also had to get up at
530am to make the masters breakfast. But now
its our free time, however the master is having
another party tonight so I dont expect to get an
early nights sleep. Mistress

• Emily- What is it like living in such a huge
  house?
• Anne - Its good although we have lots of guests
  over and it gets hot and crowded.
• Emily- What is your favourite room in this dreamy
  place?
• Anne- I can stay any where but, usually, my
  favourite place is the long gallery.
• Emily- What does it feel like having a rich and
  famous father?
• Anne-Its good because I can have anything I want
  and he allows my best friend to stay over and
  share the fun.
• Emily- Thank you for your time Anne. So there you
  have it a rich girls opinion on her own home.

• The face of the apprentice house is white like a
  ghosts face.
• Help help! screamed the frightened girl
• Ester was her name.
• All of the screaming was about a dead body next
  door to Ester.
• Pipe down! said Lucy.
• Whilst waiting for a live body to visit her,
• Right next door a ghost was waiting for her.
• Ester had never been so scared,
• Never in her life.
• The lavender was drying out
• In the same room as the dead body
• Calling out for help.
• Ester had to wait and wait and wait.
• However the wait was worth it as she got out
• Of the punishment room.
• Up, rose the spirit of the body.

Styal mill- Diary

• 19th August 1836
• Dear diary,
• Today was awful I may have got out of the
  punishment room but it was still awful. This
  Friday Mr Timpileys wife died, but he could not
  get rid of the body until Monday so he put the
  body into the store room next to the punishment
  room. Now, knowing theres a dead body next door
  I SCREAMED like mad banged on the door the
  boarded up window when a lady came to change my
  chamber pot I ran right past her and hid under a
  bed downstairs. Mr Timperly let me stay in a
  corner in the girls dormitory but I have to stay
  away from the windows so that Mr Greg wont see
  me.

• The story is told that Mrs Timprley stalks
  the store room in the night looking for Ester so
  she can tell her off for making so much noise she
  cant rest in peace at the Apprentice house.

Styal Mill

• In 1784, Samuel Greg built Style Mill and
  inherited over 30,000. He employed children from
  the age of 9 years old. Of the very many that
  came there every year most were from workhouses.
  He forced them to wake up at five in the morning
  and work on until breakfast.
• They worked thirteen hours a day and six
  days a week. After working in the mill their
  chores were for the boys to do the garden and
  girls to do the house chores.
• Regularly they went to church which was
  about two miles away. They wore clogs on their
  feet which must have hurt on that long walk.
• Also, on Sundays they had to go to school.
  In classes there was a top table and it was only
  saved for boys. The girls must not have been
  thought of as clever enough.
• In the dormitories they had to empty the
  chamber pots every day and the sheets were
  changed every month.
• They kept herbs and spices. On the wall
  there was a plant which was used as an air
  freshener. In those days air fresheners werent
  invented so they had to hang them up themselves
  every week.

Letter

• Dear father,
• I am so sorry I could not come and
  visit you but Lucy and I decided to return home
  when we grew very hungry. Master Greg put us in
  the punishment room. Lucy got put in for 3 days
  me 7. Im on my 3rd day.
• Lucy got taken out earlier today and at the
  same time Mrs Timpley died but, because its
  Friday they have to keep the body next door until
  Monday, Im terrified, Its late and I can hear
  her spirit walking back and fourth. I long for
  freedom. I pray for the day I can get out of this
  horrid room and see you. I have been banging all
  night but no one will hear my cries. Mr Timpley
  said he may let me out but I shall have to stay
  away from the windows. I still have to make wool
  spindles with a spinning genny.

Manchester bomb no justice

• The IRA attack on Manchester in June 1996 was the
  biggest mainland bomb in Britain and caused
  massive devastation to the city centre. Now an
  IRA expert claims that the bombers will never
  stand trial

15 June 1996 a sunny morning in Manchester.
Saturday shoppers were filling Market Street and
the Arndale Centre buying Father's Day
presents. The country was hosting Euro '96 and
the nation was gripped with football fever. Then,
at 0943, came the first warning. It was coded
message 'You've got one hour to clear the city
centre.' The IRA had packed 3,000 lbs of
explosives into a lorry parked on Corporation
Street. When the bomb went off, it exploded at
2,000 feet per second. The sheer power of the
blast shattered the city centre around Marks and
Spencer and the Arndale shopping centre.
Thanks to a massive operation to evacuate the
city centre, no-one was killed although, 200
people were injured, some seriously, mostly by
flying glass and debris. Greater Manchester
Police and the Anti Terrorist Squad launched a
massive investigation called Operation Cannon
to find the bombers. Information flooded in to
the incident room which eventually traced the
movements of the lorry. At one stage a report was
even sent to the Crown Prosecution Service
seeking advice on if they could arrest a
suspect. Yet, despite a huge search and a million
pound reward, nobody has ever been arrested for
the bombing

The Wellington!!

• My favourite restaurant is called the
  Wellington but I call it the Welly. With a pub
  down stairs and a restaurant up stairs, I do
  think its the best.
• All the food at the Welly is gorgeous but I
  think that the Hot pot and the Rump steak
  sandwich are best.
• ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
• So the ideal day out is to go to the Welly,
  shop all you like then nip to URBIS just to
  have some fun.

• Amy-Hello my name is Amy I am at college studying
  about the Manchester bomb in 1996. Would it be
  okay if I asked you some questions?
• Lady- yes, of course.
• Amy- Thank-you, would you like to take a seat
  here then.
• Lady- Okay.
• Amy- Where were you during the Manchester bomb?
• Lady- I was outside the Printworks.
• Amy- Did you work there?
• Lady- No, I was waiting for my friend who worked
  there, and we were just coming out.
• Amy- Did you get hurt?
• Lady- Yes, I hurt my arm and my friend, sadly
  lost her leg.
• Amy- Im sorry to here that.
• Lady- Its okay, she is used to her false leg now
  and walking well.
• Amy- Im glad to hear that. Did you have warning?
• Lady- yes a coded message was sent saying 1hr
  until the bomb but I didnt get the warning
  until 59mins after the warning had been sent.
• Amy- Ive collected enough information now. Thank
  you for your time.
