Who Invented It?
  • .Charles Drew invented the blood bank in 1941 to
collect plasma for the U.S. armed forces. The
British military used his process extensively
during WWII. He also established the American Red
Cross blood bank. The first blood bank was in
Britain. One of the first blood donations was in
    Britain.

Info on Charles Drew
  • .Charles Drew was born on June 3,1904 in
Washington, D.C. He excelled in academics and
sports during his graduate studies at Amherst
College in Massachusetts. He also was an honor
student at McGill University Medical School in
Montreal, where he specialized in physiological
anatomy. Charles researched blood plasma and
transfusions in New York City. He made his
discoveries relating to the preservation of
blood. Charles Drew died in 1950.

Preserving Blood
  • To preserve blood it must be kept in a cold
refrigerator for at least 12 days before being
transfused into another human. Red blood cells
must be used within 42 days or the cells will
be unusable. Platelet cells have a shelf life of
5 days before they become unusable. Plasma
cells have a shelf life of up to one year.

Commonly asked questions.
  • .Do I have enough blood in my body to donate?
(Yes. The body contains up 10 to 12 pints of
blood. Your whole body donate is one pint.)
  • .How long will the actual donation take?
  • (The actual donation takes about 5-10 minutes.
The entire process, from registration to
    post-donation refreshments, takes about one
    hour.)
  • .Do I have to be a certain weight to donate?
  • (Yes. You must be at least 110 lbs to donate
whole blood. (If you are donating plasma, you
must be at least 125 lbs.)

How to make a blood donation
  • There are many different types of blood
    donations.
  • Red Cell When you donate using the red
cell/plasma procedure, the blood bank draws your
blood, keeping only the red cells and plasma and
returns the rest to you, along with additional
fluids to help replace those lost during the
    procedure.
  • Whole Blood When you make a whole blood
donation, one unit of blood is drawn. Later, in
our products manufacturing department, the unit
is separated into several components, such as red
    cells, plasma, and platelets.
  • Platelet The platelet procedure selects out
just platelets from your blood and returns
everything else back to you along with additional
    fluids.
  • Double Red Cell Red cells are needed by more
patients than any other blood component. The
double red cell procedure allows the blood bank
to select out just red cells from the blood. Two
units of red cells are collected during the
procedure. Everything else is returned to you
    along with additional fluids.

7
Platelet Blood Cell
  • Platelets help control bleeding and are used by
many such as cancer and transplant patients and
burn victims. Platelet donors may donate up to 24
times in a 12 month period.

8
Red Blood/Plasma Cell
  • The red cells and plasma are separated during the
procedure, saving valuable processing time. Many
donors prefer the red cell/plasma donation
because of the additional fluids they receive.
Anyone who is eligible to make a whole blood
donation is eligible to donate using the red
cell/plasma procedure. Red cell/plasma donors may
    donate every 56 days.

9
Double Red Cells
  • This procedure allows you to double your impact
with one visit. The double red cell procedure is
great for busy donors. They can make the same
donation impact in three visits that other red
cell and whole blood donors make in six. Double
red cell donors may donate every 16 weeks. There
are additional eligibility requirements in order
to give a double red cell donation.
