2007
2
Who Responsible?
  • Owners have the ultimate responsibility for their
    animals preparedness
  • Include animal injects into your public
    information systems before, during, after
  • There are options, templates, and brochures
available for use go to www.txsart.org
  • Do not count on any state agency to purchase
  • TXSART does not supply, only connects with
    possible resource suppliers

3
Lessons LearnedHurricane Dean
  • Jurisdictions knew they needed supplies and
    waited need to plan ahead
  • Donations were counted on by local and state
    jurisdictions no donations pre-disaster

4
Traditional Approaches
  • Carve money from budget to pay for critical
    stockpile items
  • Apply for grants COGs, Foundations, other
    granting entities

5
Get Creative!
  • Work with a local animal group/4H chapter/FFA
chapter to run a drive for supplies (crates
    Tyler, Houston)
  • Contact people who may use a product regularly,
but dispose of it (airlines, rail)
  • Sign an MOU/MOA with other somewhat-local
entities who may agree to loan resources in time
of need (CAUTION May not work in all situations)

6
Other Tips
  • Form your communitys Animal Issues Committee
  • This group has the combined expertise to not only
benchmark the community, but also start planning
for whats needed in terms of resources and then
    assist in developing fundraising plans

7
Summary
  • Public information 1 tell owners what you
    expect of them
  • Lessons learned from Hurricane Dean
  • Traditional approaches
