I. Early Troubles
  • 1825- President Adams wants to buy Texas for 1
    million- Brazos River as boundary
  • 1829- President Jackson- 5 million for all of
    Texas
  • Upset Mexico- U. S. trying to take over Texas
  • 1829- Mexican president- Guerrero- abolishes
    slavery- except in Texas

II. Disturbances of 1831 and 1832
  • Taxes on customs duties collected for 1st time
  • Question over land titles-state or national
  • Military authority over civilians
  • 2 Mexican officials- Fisher and Bradburn provoked
    Texans over several issues
  • Most serious- arrest of Travis
  • Turtle Bayou Resolutions- support of Santa Annas
    revolution, helped keep serious retribution from
    occurring.

IV. Austin in Mexico City
  • Austin gets run around
  • Writes letter back to Texas that urges Texas
    forms own state government
  • Most of request eventually get approved
  • Letter falls in hands of government- Austin is
    arrested and held in isolation for 18 months,
    Jan. 1834- June, 1835
  • Will be for revolution when he gets back to Texas

  • Elected president 1833, lets Farias, VP, run
    country over period of time.

  • Dissolved Congress
  • Replaced Constitution of 1824

    Texas more powers
  • Problem- location of state capital and sale of
    public lands to speculators
  • 1. Capital moved back from San Antonio to
    Saltillo
  • 2. Land speculators upset settlers in taking
    large amounts of land
  • C. Texans upset when Santa Anna becomes dictator
  • E. War party starts getting Texans upset

    1835
  • June, 1835- Travis forces Mexican garrison out of
    Anahuac
  • General Cos- commander of Texas tried to arrest
    Lorenzo de Zavala, Texans refused to do so
  • Situation in Texas moves toward war
  • Sept, 1835- war is our only resource

  • Revolution not supported by most Texans until
    late 1835.
