  • B. Mexico opens Texas to American settlement
  • Stephen Austin feels Texas is good for cotton
    and cattle raising, so he makes a deal with the
    Mexican government.

  • The DEAL 300 American families each would get
    177 acres of farm land, 13,000 acres of pasture
    land, and be allowed self-rule.
  • In return the families must learn Spanish and
    become Catholic.
  • The families did not learn Spanish nor become
    Catholics. They also brought slavery which is
    illegal in Mexico and squatters came.

  • General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna becomes the
    Military Dictator of Mexico
  • Closes Santa Fe to Americans
  • No more self-rule for Texans to provoke a
    rebellion.

  • The Texans take the Alamo (Mexican fort)
  • February 23rd Santa Anna attacks the Alamo with
    4,000 troops (vs. 200 inside)
  • March 6th After 13 days, Santa Anna takes the
    Alamo killing/executing all Texans

Sam Houston wants President Jackson to annex Texas
  • The US does not annex Texas (slave state),
    because it would cause political unbalance in the
    Senate.
  • US does recognize Texas as an independent country
    and as a US ally.
