STRATEGIC GOAL
ECOLEAD aims at creating the necessary strong
foundations and mechanisms for establishing an
advanced collaborative and network-based industry
society in Europe.

WHAT WE UNDERSTAND BY CNO ---
Network ...
  • Constituted by a variety of entities (e.g.
    organizations and people)that are
  • largely autonomous
  • geographically distributed
  • heterogeneous in terms of their operating
environment, culture, social capital and goals
  • Nevertheless these entities collaborate to better
    achieve common or compatible goals
  • The collaborative interactions are supported by a
    computer network.

Unlike other networks, in CNO collaboration is an
intentional property that derives from the
shared belief that together the network members
can achieve goals that would not be possible or
would have a higher cost if attempted by them
individually

ECOLEAD FOCUS AREAS
VBE --- Intended to increase the level of
preparedness of organizations to
participate in (dynamic) VOs VOM --- Support
(dynamic) VOs through their life cycle PVC ---
Putting the focus on human collaboration and
corresponding value creation
TF --- The theoretical foundation shall provide
the basis for technology-independent
understanding of the area and its
phenomena.
ICT-I --- The existence of an invisible, low-cost
ICT infrastructure is a
pre-condition for the
establishment of truly dynamic
collaborative networks.
Holistic approach Avoid fragmentation of
research
8
VO BREADING ENVIRONMENTS
The operating principles of VO breeding
environments are understood and formalized, the
framework and services to support the full life
cycle of the collaborative networks are developed
in a generic way but coping with different
specificities and SME needs

THEORETICAL FOUNDATION
Understand and model the principles of
collaboration, emerging behavior and
self-organization in collaborative networks
Modeling foundation
Reference models of CNOs
New scientific discipline Collaborative Networks
What makes a reference model a reference?
14
A NEW SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINE
  • The establishment of a scientific discipline for
collaborative networks is a strong instrument to
  • consolidate and synthesize the existing
    knowledge
  • set a sound foundation for the future research
    and development in this area

A discipline of collaborative networks shall
focus on the structure, behavior, and evolving
dynamics of networks of autonomous entities that
collaborate to better achieve common or
compatible goals
15
HISTORIC CONTEXT
Collaborative Networks
NEW DISCIPLINES
Enterprise Engineering
Manufacturing / Industrial Automation
16
DEMONSTRATION IMPACT CREATION
Pilot validation of models and tools in
front-runner collaborative networks of SMEs
Achieve a robust framework for the successful
take up and exploitation of project
results Multipliers base collaboration
synergies Publications in high quality channels
A social responsibility !!!
Impact indicators? Involvement of end-users
? Interactions with WPs 2, 3, 4, 6 ? Multipliers
base and process? Demonstrations concept?
17
IMPACT CREATION PRINCIPLES ...
For a dissemination policy with quality
content (Positive) Impact creation requires
proper channels and rich content! Unlike old
tradition and practices followed by many
projects, ECOLEAD shall not make propaganda
without content. Each dissemination event shall
be well planned and its content carefully
checked in order to comply with strict quality
criteria. True impact can only be achieved via
the most respected channels. The best journals
and conferences shall be our target! Our success
will lie on scientific and technical quality!
18
IMPACT CREATION PRINCIPLES
  • Channels fitting the target
  • Dissemination with content
  • Impact needs foundations
  • - a process that goes beyond the project
    duration
  • Collaboration with other initiatives actors
  • Need for multipliers
  • Focus sustainability, re-usability of results

First produce some results, then disseminate
19
TRAINING
Creation of Virtual Learning Community Training
plans actions Reference curricula Training
actions and repository of support materials
Focus ? Strategic planning? Quantity vs
quality? Involvement of external
contributors? Training for newcomers?

SOME DIFFICULTIES
The first phase was OK but ...
Complexity too many aspects that need to be

CRITICAL ISSUES
Technical - Innovation level -
Technology independence real demonstration
- Integration inter-relationships among focus
areas - Demonstrators take up --- impact
creation process - Improvement of scientific
quality in some areas
Collaboration - More convergence
- isolated developments do not contribute to
the success of ECOLEAD - clear
(individual) responsibilities - OK to
have individual agendas, but a substantial
alignment is needed - More attention to the
developments in the other tracks - Avoid
dispersion of resources - More rational use
of resources
41
CRITICAL ISSUES ...
Coordination mainly based on results NOT on
tasks - Tasks are just a mechanism - We shall
not be so absorbed by the tasks logistics
that we loose the vision / goals - We can have
some flexibility in tasks partners
involvement ... If it increases the
chances of getting better results
Claimed resources shall match produced results
We will be evaluated by the results, not by the
performed tasks
42
CRITICAL ISSUES ...
Quality of deliverables
  • Multi-author reports need to be integrated
... Not just a concatenation of text !
  • ... An impact creation instrument
  • Clear (explicit / demonstrated) advances over
    the state of the art
  • Time for internal reviewing

Are you able to extract a journal paper out of
the deliverable? - YES ... Then why not? -
NO ... Then is it at the level of
ECOLEAD? Innovation is required not only from
academy leadership requires sound industrial
research
LEADERSHIP ???
43
COMMON / HORIZONTAL ISSUES
  • Cases scenarios
  • Modeling approaches tools
  • Development approaches environments
  • Business models value systems
  • Demonstrators impact creation
  • Interactions
  • ...

44
CONCERTATION ACTIVITIES
  • An EC initiative
  • Concertation is a key process which ensures that
    the value of the
  • cluster programme as whole exceeds that of the
    individual projects
  • taken in isolation
  • A forum for projects working on similar
technical problems to share ideas and
    experiences
  • Constructive review and monitoring by peers
  • Opportunities for developing a consensus view
    among peer projects
  • A focus for occasional topical workshops
