Title: Exploring Managed and Virtual Environments
1Exploring Managed and Virtual Environments
2(No Transcript)
3The Contribution of ICT and E-learning
- ICT can make a significant contribution to
teaching and learning across all subjects and
ages, inside and outside the curriculum - ICT can provide opportunities to engage and
motivate children and young people and meet their
individual learning needs - ICT can help link school and home by providing
access to teaching and learning materials, and to
assessment and attendance data
4Reality
- But the vast majority of schools are only
beginning to tap the potential of ICT to enhance
teaching and learning and to modernise the way in
which schools are run and organised.
5Mr Clarkes Vision
- .my vision is one where schools are confidently,
successfully and routinely exploiting ICT
alongside other transformational measures. - By doing so they will be delivering an
education that equips learners for life in the
Information Age of the 21st century.
6The Way Forward
7Aims for the next stage of development will be
to ensure that for all schools
8Summary of aims
- ICT makes a significant contribution to teaching
and learning across all subjects and ages, inside
and outside the curriculum - ICT is used to improve access to learning for
pupils with a diverse range of individual needs,
including those with SEN and disabilities - ICT is used as a tool for whole-school
improvement - ICT is used as a means of enabling learning to
take place more easily beyond the bounds of the
formal school organisation and outside the school
day and of enhancing the quality of such
experiences and - ICT capabilities are developed as key skills
essential for participation in todays society
and economy.
9Future Focus
- the science of teaching using ICT
- the development of the school as the lead
ICT-rich institution at the hub of community
learning and - development of the means to deliver effective
support for all schools.
10Developing ICT pedagogy
- Improving collaboration between Government LEA
and schools - Developing range of advice, guidance and support
for teachers - Developing assessment systems
- Improving Professional Development opportunities
- Offering practical support for integrating ICT
into lessons - Help for teachers to develop learning beyond the
classroom

12Managed Learning Environments
13Managed Learning Environments?
- To find out more about MLEs go to the Becta
Website - www.becta.org.uk/research/ictrn
14What Are Managed Learning Environments?
- The term Managed Learning Environment (MLE)
refers to the whole range of information systems
and processes of a educational establishment
(including its VLE if it has one) that contribute
directly, or indirectly, to learning and the
management of that learning. - (JISC2000b)
15Managed Learning and Virtual Learning Environments
16Virtual Learning Environment
- A Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) is one
possible component of a MLE it refers to the
component(s) within an MLE that provides the
online interactions of various kinds which can
take place between learners and tutors, including
online learning. - Source JISC http//www.jisc.ac.uk/mle/ssues.html
17What Exactly Do VLEs Do?
- VLEs can be a combination of the following
features
18Summary of VLE Features
- Communication tools such as e-mail, bulletin
boards and chat rooms - Collaboration tools such as on-line forums,
intranets, electronic diaries and calendars - Tools to create on-line content and courses to
create learning modules - On-line assessment and marking tools that track
student activity and achievement - Integration with school management information
systems - Controlled access to curriculum resources
- Student access to content and communications
beyond the school.
19Are We Ready for Complete MLEs or VLEs?
- What do schools actually need at this moment?
- Individual web space for staff and pupils.
- Remote anytime anywhere password access to a
safe controlled environment. - Controlled communication and collaboration access
- Ability to contribute to and or use on- line
resources and content - Opportunity for parents to support learning
process - Opportunity to explore assessment
20The General Benefits of a VLE
- ICT within an integrated environment
- one piece of software with a consistent look and
feel, easier to learn and manage - different communication dimensions through
e-mail, discussion groups and chat rooms, - improved learning environment
21The Benefits of a VLE for Students
- Anytime, anywhere access
- (Jacobsen and Kremer 2000)
- Improved motivation and skill
- (Watts and Lloyd 2000)
- Development of higher levels of deep and
strategic learning styles - (Gibbs 1999)
22The Benefits of a VLE for Teachers
- Improved communication with pupils, exploring
other options than face to face - Allows teachers to be flexible and creative with
the curriculum - Allows teachers opportunity to prepare and store
work, to create and share resources
23The benefits of a VLE for Parents
- Improved communication
- Allows for monitoring both work and even
attendance! - Allows parents opportunity to support learning.
24Factors for the Effective Use of VLEs
- Will the environment support learning?
- Skill level of staff and training needs
- Security, storage
- Common standards interoperability-
- Technical support
25Key Questions
- Becta Key questions for schools
- Can the school sustain a MLE, financially,
technically and administratively? - Will introducing a MLE add value to the teaching
and learning process, over and above current
systems? - Should the school look for intermediate solutions
first such as providing the content only? - Is it worth considering working in a consortium
with other schools, to share costs and resources? - What will the financial implication be?
