3Course Introduction
PURPOSE Anorexia, bulimia, and obesity
involve disordered eating patterns. Although the
etiology of these conditions is poorly
understood, it is my belief that a complex
interaction between environmental, social,
cultural, and biological factors is involved.
This course will focus on the biological factors
associated with these complex eating disorders.
Both laboratory animal and human data will be
discussed with a strong emphasis on current
scientific research. This course will be taught
as a seminar. I will provide the relevant
background material that will be used to
stimulate group discussion. Participation is
strongly encouraged. I am very interested in your
ideas and opinions. COURSE MATERIALS
There is no assigned text book for this
course. All material will be drawn from current
scientific articles. Class notes are located at

short-answer questions. Oral presentation (100
points) and paper (100 points) Each student is
required to research two topics. One will be
related to eating disorders, the other to
obesity. You will then present your research in a
20 min presentation and in a short paper. Class
participation (50 points) A grade, based on
your class participation, will be assigned at the
