  irrational fear of becoming obese results in
  severe weight loss from self-imposed starvation.

  of purging, or clearing of the digestive tract
  follows cycles of overeating.

  by compulsive overeating.

What are the causes, symptoms, and treatment of
the eating disorder anorexia nervosa?

• Causes poor self concept, outside pressures,
  high expectations, a need to be accepted, teen
  females

  obsession with exercising, emotional problems, no
  interest in food, denial of eating problem,
  distorted body image

• One percent of teenage girls in the U.S. develop
  anorexia nervosa and up to 10 of those may die
  as a result.
• 1 in 10 of this percentage will die.

What are the similarities and differences between
bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder.

• Like bulimics, people with binge eating disorder
  eat large amounts of food at one time. Unlike
  bulimics, binge eaters do not purge to rid their
  bodies of the food.
• Research suggests that about four percent (4),
  or four out of one hundred, college-aged women
  have bulimia.

Why do people with eating disorders require

• Professional health services are needed to
  address the physical and psychological aspects of
  eating disorders.

• Studies suggest that about sixty percent of adult
  Americans, both male and female, are overweight.
  About one third (34) are obese, meaning that
  they are 20 or more above normal, healthy
  weight. Many of these people have binge eating
  disorder.
