Ashanti-Anglo wars (1823-1896)

• These were a series of four battles between the
  Ashanti of modern-day Ghana, and the British.
  Britains losses in these wars were living proof
  that the people would never be conquered for long.

Battle of Adowa(1896)

• The first Ethiopian-Italian war. The invading
  Italians suffered huge losses in the hands of
  Emperor Meneliks troops. The Italians attempt
  to take over Ethiopia failed miserably. This
  battle ensured that Ethiopia would never be
  colonised.

Battle of Isandlwana, 1879

• The Zulus under their King- Cetshwayo fought a
  fierce battle against the invading English
  troops. This battle fueled the fires for many
  other revolts against the British.

Bakiga resistance(late 1900s)

• The Bakiga community of modern day Rwanda
  fought continuously against German colonial
  troops. The anti-centrist cult of Nyabingi was
  the strongest factor in the peoples resistance
  to German rule, that proclaimed a life-long
  battle against the colonialists.

The Nandi Uprising under Koitalel Arap
Samoei(early 20th century)

• Koitalel Arap Samoei led the Nandi people of
  modern Kenya in fighting against the British. His
  people greatly opposed colonial rule, and dreaded
  the building of the Kenya-Uganda railway line
  which had been foreseen to be the beginning of
  the end for tribal sovereignty and culture.

Maji Maji Rebellion(1905-1906

• The Maji Maji rebellion was the greatest
  challenge to German colonial rule in Africa, and
  took place in Tanganyika(modern day Tanzania.)
  The rebellion was led by a spirit medium of the
  Ngoni people- Kinjikitile Ngwale.

Giriama resistance under Mekatilili wa Menza(1914)

• Mekatilili Wa Menza was a Kenyan woman warrior,
  who led the Giriama people in a rebellion against
  British missionaries in 1914. Giriama people, who
  inhabit Kenyan coast, had Kayas, sacred forest
  shrines, which were being destroyed by the
  missionaries. They fought to preserve their
  culture.

• The Malagasy Uprising (or Revolt of Madagascar)
  was an attempted revolution against the French by
  nationalists on the island of Madagascar between
  1947 and1948.

Mau Mau uprising(1952-1960)

• The Mau Mau was an insurgency by Kenyan rebels
  against the British Colonial administration that
  lasted from 1952 to 1960. The core of the
  resistance was formed by members of the Kikuyu,
  Meru and Embu tribes. The rising hastened Kenyan

• This was a complex guerilla warfare that
  eventually led to Algeria getting their
  independence from France

Movement for the liberation of Angola (1961-1975)

• The Popular Movement for the Liberation of
  Angola - Party of Labour is an Angolan Political
  Party that has ruled the country since
  independence in 1975. The MPLA fought against
  Portugal in the war for independence from 1961 to
  1975.

Soweto uprising (1976)

• Though not a victory for the Black South
  Africans, this uprising helped bring the plight
  of the Black South Africans to the international
  scene. The horror and cruelty of the massacre of
  the children was enough to even enough to move
  some apartheid-regime sympathizers and show this
  regime that they could not suppress the people
  much longer.
