Alliances and Land Agreements
  • In the beginning both of these had a positive
impact for the European settlers and the Catawba,
    Cherokee, and Yemassee tribes
  • The Catawba tribe helped to protect the settlers
from other hostile Native American tribes
  • They were wiped out by a smallpox epidemic
  • Soon disagreements over land agreements lead to
hostility between the tribes and settlers

5
The Yemassee War
  • The Yemassee tribe first came to SC from Florida
because of problems they had with the Spanish
    settlers in the region
  • The impact of the war was mostly felt in the
    Lowcountry of SC
  • Yemassee tribes began to attack settlements
  • Disagreements over business deals with the
    settlers
  • With the help of the Cherokee tribes the settlers
were able to defeat the Yemassee
  • Remaining members of the tribe returned to
    Florida
  • Settlers learn from this war to expect little
    help from the British crown

6
Later Relationship
7
The Cherokee War
  • As settlers began to move into the Upcountry they
had greater contact with the tribe
  • As French fur traders moved into the area the
English setters saw a need to sign a treaty with
    the Cherokee
  • Cherokee and English settlers had different
    understandings of the treaty
  • Peace would last for 30 years
  • Peace came to an end when colonial governor
attempted to control Cherokee by stopping all
    trade and taking leaders hostage

8
Result of Cherokee War
  • The war would last two years
  • A new treaty was signed that forced Cherokee to
give up much of their land and created a boundary
dividing the colony and the Cherokee territory
