• is a photographic archive of the archaeological
  and architectural remains of ancient Athens
  (Greece).
• It is used today primarily as a resource for
  students of classical art archaeology.

The Parthenon

• The supreme achievement of the Greeks was their
  claim that everything--from the human body to the
  entire universe--was governed by an order
  accessible to human reason.
• That claim has been the basis for western
  civilization ever since.
• The Temple of Athena Parthenos, the Parthenon,now
  a ruin lying atop the Acropolis of Athens, is the
  testament in stone to that claim.

• It had six Doric columns across the front.
• Three Ionic columns on either side of the central
  corridor
• Workers labored from 437 to 432 B.C. under the
  direction of Mnesicles to complete the main
  building and its two wings.
• It stood for 2,000 years, until a series of
  explosions finished off it's finer details.
• In 1640, lightning ignited gunpowder stored in
  the structure's Ionic Hall, blowing off the roof
  forty-seven years later, a Venetian siege claimed
  the neighboring temple of Athena Nike.
