  • Arbor Day began on April 10, 1872 in Nebraska
  • Brainchild of Secretary of Agriculture Julius
    Sterling Morton under Grover Cleveland.
  • Nebraska's first Arbor Day was an amazing success
    with over one million trees planted.
  • Nebraska was known as the tree-planters state. 
  • Nebraska made it an annual legal holiday in 1885,
    using April 22nd to coincide with Morton's
    birthday.
  • In 1970, President Richard Nixon proclaimed the
    last Friday in April as National Arbor Day.

  • Materials
  • Pine cone, paper plate, plastic knife, smooth
    peanut butter, birdseed, yarn, scissors, and
    plastic bags
  • Instructions
  • Cut a long length of yarn to hang the bird
    feeder.
  • Tie the yarn in a knot around both ends of the
    pine cone.
  • Put a large clump of peanut butter on the paper
    plate.
  • Spread the peanut butter inside the pine cone and
    around the edges.
  • Sprinkle the birdseed over the pine cone.
  • Roll the pine cone in the birdseed that is on the
    plate.
  • Put in plastic bag to carry.
  • Hang the bird feeder on the tree and enjoy
    watching the birds eat their treat!
