What is the dust bowl?

• Took place in the 1930s and 1940s
• Caused by drought and lack of crop rotations by
  farmers
• Soil dried up and began to blow
• Crops failed
• Animals died
• Many moved to California

Summary

• Billie Jo and her mother and father live in
  Oklahoma in the 1930s.
• Billie Jo loves to play the piano and gets to
  travel with Mad Dog playing shows.
• Billie Jo and her Mama are burned in an accident
  involving kerosene, Billie Jos hands are burned
  and Mama is burned so badly that she dies and so
  does the baby she is carrying.
• Billie Jo and her father are like strangers after
  Mamas death.
• Eventually Billie Jos father meets a new woman,
  Billie Jo makes up with her father, and rain
  comes.

Resolution

• After running away Billie Jo returns and forgives
  her father
• Billie Jo and Pas relationship begins to heal
• Pa falls in love with Louise
• Rain comes and fills Pas pond
• Life continues and Billie Jo and Pa learn to love
  again.
