2Piet Mondrian
- Born on March 7th, 1872, in the Netherlands.
- Trained as a teacher, began his career teaching
primary education.
3Early Paintings
- While working as a teacher, he also practiced
painting. - His early paintings were of landscapes of
Holland. - He moved to Paris in 1912 where his artwork was
influenced by cubism.

4Return to the Netherlands
- World War I broke out while he was visiting home,
and he was forced to stay in the Netherlands. - He stayed at the Laren artists colony, and met
other artists who were working towards the
abstract style. - He published his essays defining his artistic
theory, which he called neoplasticism.

5Return to Paris
- He returned to Paris in 1919.
- He began producing the grid-based paintings that
he is known for in late 1919.

6Lines tended to fade before they reached the end
of the painting, rather than ending
abruptly. Only the black lines are flat, other
colors have layers of paint, giving them depth.

7London and New York
- In 1938 he left Paris and moved to London due to
the rise of Fascism. - When the Netherlands were invaded and France fell
in 1940 he left Paris for New York. - His paintings from this period have more
overlapping lines than previous ones. - He also adds colored lines to his paintings
instead of the black lines.

8Death
- Toward the end of his life, his paintings begin
to be bright and lively, reflecting the city and
music that inspired them. - In New York City in 1944, Mondrian died of
pneumonia at the age of 71.
