- Dr. Ezell,
- Regarding the use of podcasts, I can see endless
uses...This activity came to mind immediately -
Last year I divided the studentsinto pairs. One
student was the reporter and the other student
assumedthe identity of a fairy tale character.
The kids worked together, writingquestions and
answers for their "live" interview and then
presented it tothe class. This would be perfect
with podcasts. We could share theinterviews
with the whole school (and parents) using
podcasts. - Graduate Student in The College of Education
17Student Testimonials
- I used them with GT this last year. The students
have to create a mockbusiness. They create a
survey of what business would be good forour
community, then they have to make grand opening
flyers, business cards,brochures, etc. This
year I had them make a 30 second radio
commercial. Ihave a link on our website if you
want to hear some. Some are pretty goodand some
are just so so. They are 4th graders after all!
The hardest thingwas to get it at about 30
seconds. - Graduate Student in The College of Education
18Student Testimonials
- Absolutely, I believe podcast can be incorporated
in the mathematicsclassroom. For example, there
is a great need for students to beconversant in
the language of math, e.g., reading numbers,
clearlyexplaining process steps and algorithms,
in addition to verballyrationalizing their
solutions for reasonableness (which are all
TEKS).Often students write as they speak, so if
our students can explain theirthinking
orally,their writing about mathematics will
benefit.A specific example of using a podcast
could be two-fold(1) Give students an equation
to solve, then have the students describetheir
process for solving step by step.(2) Have a
classmates listen to podcasts and evaluate
whether the equationwas solved correctly and
explained with clarity. (Evaluation is
where/howwe want students to thinking about
their assignments.)Loved this assignment. - Graduate Student in The College of Education
