The Hero Phil Connors

• Phil is a common man hero because he has no
  special heroic traits. He is just a common man
  in an extraordinary situation.
  
• He has a major flaw, too hes self-centered.

Animus and Anima

• There is no obvious Animus character here that
  represents Phils dark side. Its possible that
  Ned Ryerson, the insurance agent, is the villain,
  however.
• The Anima is clearly Rita, his love interest.
  Phil cannot end his quest until he recognizes his
  love for her.

The Departure Stage

• Call to Adventure The cop tells Phil he has to
  go back to Punxsatawney.
  
• Refusal of the Call Phil says no way! and
  tries to get out of it.
  
• Supernatural Aid Is there any here?
• Crossing of the First Threshold I Got You Babe.

The Road of Trials

• Phil is destructive at first, breaking the law by
  driving his car down train tracks.
  
• He uses his power to fool Nancy into dating
  him.
  
• He steals money from the truck.
• He tries to fool Rita into loving him.

The Abyss

• Phil realizes he cant get Rita by fooling her
• He decides life isnt worth living and tries to
  kill himself.
  
• And he keeps on trying, and trying, and trying.

The Revelation/Transformation

• Phil has his first honest conversation with Rita
  about his quest, she trusts him, and he realizes
  he can be good.
  
• Phil starts improving himself with piano lessons
  and by helping others.
  
• He learns poetry.

The Atonement

• After improving himself and treating Rita with
  respect, he can finally tell her he loves her,
  and he means it.
  
• He says Im happy right now, and thats all that
  matters.

The Return

• The next day, he awakes and realizes his quest
  has ended. He has found love and he shares it
  with Rita.
