Grants Drive to Richmond
  • Wilderness Campaign series of battles in
    northern and central VA.
  • Union lost twice as many casualties.
  • Grant kept pushing on, but could not take
    Richmond.

Sherman Strikes the South
  • William Tecumseh Sherman marched with 100,000
    men from TN to GA.
  • Goal to take Atlanta.
  • Waged total war destroying civilian and army
    supplies, railroads, bridges, livestock.
  • Sherman felt this would cripple the South ending
    the war.

The South Surrenders
  • Lee retreated from Richmond. By April 1865 Lee
    was surrounded and forced to surrender.
  • Signed the surrender documents, ending the long
    bloody war on Sunday, April 9, 1865.
  • I feltsad and depressed at the downfall of a
    foe who had fought so long and valiantly, and had
    suffered so much for a cause, though that cause
    was, I believe, one of the worst for which a
