How it started
  • After General Robert E. Lee had defeated the Army

  • He planned to destroy the railroad bridge at
    Harrisburg
  • Lee had reorganized his two large corps into
three new corps. James Longstreet took command of
his First Corps. However, the old corps of
Lieutenant General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson
was divided into two, with the Second Corps going
to Lt. Gen. Richard S. Ewell and the new Third
Corps commanded by Lt. Gen. A.P. Hill.

  • The Federal army of Potomac was under control of
    General Joseph Hooker
  • However, he was replaced by George Meade due to

    through Carlisle, and into York.
  • The Battle began when Confederate troops were
attacking the Union cavalry division on McPherson
    Ridge, west of town.
  • Union were out numbered and managed to drive the
Confederate back with the help of John Reynolds's
    infantry division.
  • Long into the night Union troops labored over
their defenses while Meade's army arrived and
    took positions.

6
2nd Day of Battle
  • The battle lines were drawn up in two sweeping
    arcs
  • Lee ordered an attack against both Union flanks
  • The lack of communication proved the downfall of
    the Confederacy.

7
3rd Day of Battle
  • Lee decided to press the attack to the Union
    center on Cemetery Ridge.
  • General George E. Pickett attempted to do one
  • of the most incredible efforts in military
    history
  • a mass infantry assault of 15,000 Confederate
troops across the open field toward the Union
    center on Cemetery Ridge.
  • Pickett's men reached, but failed to break the
    union line.
  • Action lead to disaster, known as Picketts
    Charge
