• Confederate 75,000 troops
• Union forces tried to hold position on Cemetery
  Ridge, south of town

• Confederate General George Picket made an attack
  on the middle of the Union line.
• 15,000 rebels charged up the hill and was a great
  loss
• Known as Picketts Charge

• Lincoln upset again because his Generals didnt
  defeat Lee once and for all
• Union still claimed victory at Gettysburg
• Lee could not win in the North

• Southern losses more, (1/3 of Lees army) 28,000
  men
• Lee went back to Virginia
• The South was never as strong after this battle,
  even though they lasted two more years

• Confederate troops surrendered to Grant at
  Vicksburg in Mississippi
• Grant had begun this attack on Vicksburg in May
  1863
• Direct attacks failed so he kept at it for a long
  siege until he won

  supplies
• Eventually Confederates ran out of food and
  supplies
• Civilians moved into caves to hide from the
  constant bombardment of shelling
