• General of the Confederate army
• Graduated 2nd in his class from West Point
• After the War Lee became the president of
  Washington and Lee College

Ulysses S. Grant

• General of the Union Armies
• Took Lees surrender on April 9 1865
• Became the 18th president
• Died bankrupt

Frederic Douglass

• His oratorical and literary brilliance thrust him
  into the forefront of the U.S. Abolition movement
• Escaped from slavery in 1838
• The first black man to hold high ranking office
  in the U.S. Government

Edward Porter Alexander

• Helped design the signal flag system
• Was given command of the I Corps
• His well placed cannons at Fredericksburg helped
  defeat the union army

• Had no formal education
• President during the Civil War
• His Goals during the war were to preserve the

• Shot at Fords Theater on April 14, 1865

• Got his name from the Battle from the Battle of
  Bull Run

• Though he was born, lived and married in the

• Quoted as saying Damn the torpedoes full speed
  ahead

• Graduated last in his class from West Point
• Lead Picketts charge at the Battle of Gettysburg
