Safety Apparel (What to wear?)
  • Always wear protective eyewear for eye and face
    protection. (splash, dust, or fumes)
  • Always wear shoes in the lab. Shoes must
    COMPLETELY cover the foot.
  • (no sandals or open-toed shoes allowed).

Safety Apparel
  • Always wear a chemical-resistant plastic apron in
    the laboratory.
  • No loose clothing in the lab, such as shirts or
    blouses with oversized sleeves.
  • Long hair must be pinned up or otherwise
    restrained.

Safety Environment
  • No food or drink in the lab.
  • Bring only necessary items to the lab station.
    Clutter increases the chance of Accidents! Store
    purses, bookbags, etc. at desk.
  • Trash cans are for PAPER TRASH ONLY! No glass or
    metal in trash cans! If you break something,
    notify the instructor immediately. DO NOT TRY TO
    CLEAN UP BROKEN GLASS YOURSELF.

Safety Environment
  • Dispose of chemicals according to the written or
    verbal instructions for each chemical. NEVER put
    chemicals in the trash cans or glass disposal
    containers.
  • In the event of a chemical spill, notify your
    instructor or the lab supervisor for directions.

Safe Work Habits
  • - Never put anything in your mouth while in the
    lab! Do not touch chemicals! ALWAYS wash your
    hands before leaving the lab.
  • Take only what you need from a container of
    reagent. DO NOT return the excess to the
    container! Share the excess or inform lab
    instructor.

Safe Work Habits
  • Follow written and/or verbal instructions EXACTLY
    during all experiments. DO NOT conduct any
    unauthorized experiments!!
  • When pouring, keep the container BELOW eye level.
  • NEVER LEAVE A LIT BURNER UNATTENDED!!!
  • NEVER leave a potentially dangerous situation
    (such as a reaction in progress) unattended.

Emergency Planning
  • In the event of any accident or injury, NO MATTER
    HOW MINOR, notify the lab instructor
  • Learn the locations of all safety equipment--fire
    extinguishers, eyewash stations, showers, and
    fire blankets.

Other Lab Rules
  • Always clean your work space before leaving the
    lab. Wipe the bench top with a clean, damp paper
    towel.
  • Return all equipment in the same condition that
    you received it!
  • Make sure all electrical equipment is turned off
    and unplugged, all water taps, gas and vacuum
    outlets are turned off before you leave the lab!
