Under this green flag, Texas was free from
Spanish rule for one year. Augustus Magee and his
troops were defeated at the Battle of Medina in
1813, crushing the Green Flag Republic.

In the 1820s and 1830s, colonists lived under
the State Flag of Coahuila y Tejas. The two
stars represent the two regions of the state,
Texas and Coahuila.

This flag was flown by citizens of Gonzales,
Texas to dare the Mexican army to come and
repossess a cannon that had been given to them to
use as protection against the Indians. This
battle began the Texas Revolution.

Before Texans began fighting for their
independence from Mexico, they fought for
liberties that were given to them by the Mexican
Constitution of 1824. This flag flew over the
Alamo during the 13 days of fighting as a
reminder to the Mexican Army of the treaty of
1824.

This flag belonged to one of the many independent
groups who reported to Stephen F. Austin at San
Felipe to fight for Texass freedom.

9Johanna Troutman Flag

Johanna Troutman, known as the Betsy Ross of
Texas, made this flag for volunteers fighting for
Texas independence. The unit was a group of
Texans whose arms were provided by Georgia. This
flag was one of the most inspirational symbols
during the days between the fall of the Alamo and
the victory at San Jacinto.

This flag flew over the first Constitutional
Convention in 1836 when Texas independence was
declared.

This flag was made for the Battle at San Jacinto.
The battle lasted 20 minutes, resulting in 630
of the 1,500 Mexicans being killed by the 743
attacking Texans. Santa Anna was captured in
this battle.

David G. Burnet, the interim president of the
Texas Republic, created this first Texas naval
flag. If the Texas Navy had not kept supply
lines open, the Texas Revolution might have
failed.

The first flag of the Texas Republic was designed
in 1836 shortly after the Battle of San Jacinto.
This flag was replaced shortly after it was
designed.

The second flag of the Texas Republic was a
redesigned version of the first flag. Under this
flag, Texas was recognized as an independent
nation. The flag was used for three years before
being replaced by our current Texas flag.

This flag is the only U.S. state flag to have
once flown over an independent republic. When
Texas was added the the United States, this flag
became the flag of the State of Texas. The red
represents bravery, the white represents purity,
and the blue represents loyalty.

16Activity
- After viewing the Power Point presentation,
the teacher will show large versions of some of
the flags and put them in order on the board.
The teacher will model how to record this
information on a timeline. - The students will then be split up into groups
of three or four students to complete a group
activity. Each group will be given a copy of the
Power Point presentation to use as a reference.
17- Each group will choose at least 6 flags from
the presentation and draw a timeline including
pictures of those flags and historical
descriptions. - Students will also create a list of questions
using their timeline to quiz their classmates in
a game at the end of the period. - The teacher will use the students questions
to lead the class in a game. Each group will
compete against the other groups. - If time allows, groups can share their
timelines with the class.
