Pressure From Friends
  • It may seem like everyone smokes. But really
    less than 1 out of 5 teens smoke.
  • You can decide not to smoke.
  • Heres some ways to say no if friends are
    pressuring you.

Pressure From Friends
  • Dont make a big deal out of it. Just say, No
    thanks, I dont smoke.
  • If youre still getting pressured, say, Ive
    really decided. I dont like how it smells.
  • If you act confident, theyll respect you and
    stop pressuring you.

Pressure From Movies
  • Actors may look cool when they smoke, but smoking
    to look good is a killer myth.
  • Movies dont show actors coughing or brushing
    their teeth before a kissing scene. They dont
    show how easy it is to become addicted or to get
    lung cancer.
  • Base YOUR decision not to smoke on what you
    know-not what you see on a movie screen.

Pressure From Advertising
  • Ads affect everyone. Even if you dont want to
    smoke, ads can tempt you to try it.
  • Tobacco ads try to convince people to smoke so
    tobacco companies can make more money.
  • Dont let tobacco companies or their ads
    manipulate you into smoking.

Dealing With Stress
  • Smoking wont make stress go away. In fact it
    raises your blood pressure and makes your heart
    beat faster leading to MORE stress.
  • Deal with stress by talking over problems with a
    friend or getting some exercise.

How to Refuse
  • Say no and say why not.
  • State your reasons for saying no.
  • Suggest something else to do.
  • Repeat no walk away.

  • Use humor to make your point.
  • Say that the drug doesnt taste good, or that the
    activity suggested is no fun.
  • Say that its against the law.
  • Say that you dont want to become ill.
  • Say it is against your family rules.

    now.
  • Change the subject- Say now and start talking
    about something else.
  • The cold shoulder- Ignore the other person
  • Avoid the situation- Stay away from the situation
    where you are likely to be pressured to smoke.
  • Walk away- Say no and walk away.
