Philadelphian Church Age Begins (KJV 1611
begins to catch on!)
This country was started by people coming from
Europe in order to have freedom of religion.
The Bible was the book that America was founded
upon. The Book was read daily, looked to for
every need, was preached from, and was respected
to the point that it was believed - as written
from the saved lost!
The first book printed in America was the Bay
Psalm Book!
Nobody could read music nor did they have the
time or desire to study! They just had to
survive and they survived with their Bible, not
their music!!
Early Christians in America had little strength,
kept his word did not deny his name
They were rewarded with open doors doors they
could not even shut!

Parts of a Country Were Evangelized!
Because of such musical illiteracy, The Singing
School Movement developed men would travel
around and teach people about music.
Hymns Books started to become available, although
most were just words. Remember, Deaconing
Lining was the way of singing.
The Revival Spirit was in need of Revival Music
Charles Wesley began to write many hymns that
were greatly accepted by the people. He wanted
his music to 1) bring the unsaved to hear the
gospel and 2) for the saint to be uplifted. His
music was of conviction, salvation, heaven, the
trials victories of a Christian.
His hymns related the spiritual unrest of a soul
bound by sin instantaneously released by
conversion followed by a great assurance.
No more corporate praise but private thoughts
and feelings within the context of the hymn for
person singing.
His music relates to Christian trials and
victories!

His music is known for repetition of words and
breaking up of tunes.

world. From city to city and including the
countryside between cities were all heavily

With all these revivals in the city and in the
countryside came the opportunities for exciting
singing! The camp meeting was famous for its
singing as well as its circuit riders
preaching.
Next to Preaching was the Singing
The hymns written during these times are
considered the best hymns ever written. Harmony
was very perfect and proper the design of the
music was the same as Japheths classical
structures. The music was perfectly balanced in
every way, including most doctrinal content.
