Background
  • Started in 1994 and originally managed by William
    H. Gates Sr. with an initial starting value of
    94 million
  • In 1997, Melinda and Bill gates launched the
    Gates Library Foundation, but the William H.
    Gates Foundation continued as a separate entity
  • Patty Stonesifer takes on the leadership of the
    William H. Gates Foundation (Former Microsoft
    Executive)
  • In 1999, the William H. Gates Foundation was
    renamed the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

  • The foundation has to move from William H. Gates
    Sr.s basement to a new location in Seattle
  • The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation merges with
    the Gates Learning Foundation in 2000
  • In 2005, the mayor of Seattle and CEO of the
    foundation, Patty Stonesifer announce the plans
    to move the foundation to a new place in the
    winter of 2010
  • Foundation is reorganized into three major
    categories Global Health, Global Development,
    and United States in 2006

Global Development Program
  • Committed to helping hundreds of millions of
    families in the developing world
  • This program hopes to get people out of extreme
    poverty and hunger within the next 10 to 15
    years
  • Support efforts to improve crop production and
    access to markets
  • Provide financial services to the poor
  • Support public access to computing worldwide

Global Health Program
  • Mission is to encourage the development of
    lifesaving medical advances and to help people
    that are constantly affected
  • Funding is focused in two main areas
  • Access to existing vaccines, drugs, and other
    tools to fight diseases common in developing
    countries
  • Research to develop health solutions that are
    effective, affordable, and practical

  • The mission of this program has three specific
    goals
  • To significantly increase the number of students
    who graduate from high school with the skills
    needed to succeed in college and work
  • To improve the lives of at-risk children, youth,
    and families in Washington state and Greater
    Portland, Oregon
  • To expand access to information through
    technology in public libraries that serve
    low-income and disadvantaged communities

  • This program has scholarships to help fulfill
    students potential
  • D.C. Achievers Scholarship provides college
    scholarships to select students in six Washington
    D.C. high schools
  • Gates Cambridge Scholarship creating a network
    of international leaders to address issues of
    equality in health, technology, and learning
  • Gates Millennium Scholarship provides tuition
    funding for outstanding low-income minority
    students

  • Gates Public Service Law Scholarship funds the
    education of students who pursue careers in
    public service law
  • Washington State Achievers Scholarship
    encourages schools to create cultures of high
