- Mfg. Workforce Strategy Update (Charlie)
- Charlie, Audrey, and Duncan Wyse met with Mike
Hoseus May 5th to learn how Toyota is interacting
with the educational systems in the regions where
they have mfg. plants (Kentucky Mississippi) - 5 Universities offer on-site classes to Toyota
employees on all shifts, including graveyard - Toyota asks the educational system to focus on
the following key personal elements
Communication skills, Teamwork, Work Ethic, and
Problem Solving - A benchmark trip may get set up to visit Toyota
- SME is pursuing holding a regional Lean-Green
Conference event in the fall 2008. Audrey is
working with SME to include a flight for
workforce development and issues - The Oregon Manufacturing website continues to be
populated with stories from the consortia - OMWS funding for 2009 is unknown

- LEAN PRINCIPLE TRAINING CLASSES WITH
LEARN-LEAD-TEACH - The following classes are scheduled
- July 25th Problem Solving (re-run) at MEC NW
- July 28th Introduction to Lean at Timbercon
- July 30th 31st Pull/Kanban at Columbia
Machine - August 1st Standard Work at Axiom
- Julie has the action to announce these classes to
membership. Included will be marketing
Learn-Lead-Teach to encourage members to host
classes to fill in the week of July 21st - Julie has the action to e-mail Mark Lewis the
courses offered by Learn-Lead-Teach - LEARNING TOURS
- Scheduled Learning Tours continue to sell out!
Many have 10 people signed up prior to making
the formal announcement with agenda! - AME REGIONAL EVENTS
- Julie, Scott Simmons, and Phil Steklenski taught
a 1.5 day event titled, PDCA in Action in Boise,
ID. The class was very well received. Roger
Aubert from Triad attended and is interested in
hosting this class for NWHPEC. Julie has the
action to plan and schedule this class with Scott
Phil. A small attendance fee will be charged
to cover travel expenses, etc. - Julie and Scott are offering a Kaizen
Facilitation class July 17th 18th. Welch Allyn
is the tour company on the 18th.

- Elaine Prause from the Energy Trust of Oregon and
Mike Fenske delivered a presentation on how the
Energy Trust can partner with NWHPEC members.
Key benefits include - Programs specifically designed for industrial
companies (manufacturing) - In-depth technical studies of efficiency projects
- Financial incentives paid at project completion
- Technical study and funding for renewable
resources - Energy Trust of Oregon has 11M to spent on
industry in 2008. Cant find enough companies
willing to participate! - Companies can receive up to 95 of all costs
covered in energy improvements through incentives
tax credits - NWHPEC Member Benefits
- Program introduction and explanation start by
assessing member interest. Set up initial
kick-off meeting to introduce membership to the
Energy Trust and their industry offerings - Show how energy management and Lean connect use
NWHPEC member case studies with strong returns - Energy consumption assessments on-site walk
throughs by energy contractors to show
improvement opportunities - On-site training potentially Value Stream Map
energy flow. Potentially include as a topic for
Learning Tours - Julie has the action to assess member interest,
plan kick-off general Energy Trust introduction
membership meeting, etc. - Julie has been asked to make a short presentation
at the San Diego AME Conference during a session
on consortia. The presentation will focus on
the value received by our members. Julie has the
action to contact the membership and ask them to
share the value they receive. Suggested ways to
do this Via e-mail split questions among
total membership, so each member doesnt get all
the same questions. Identify how to send e-mail
using distribution list, but showing individuals
name in To box adds personal touch
