Stamp Act
  • This was essentially a tax put on things that
    were printed. This might include legal
    documents, newspapers, playing cards, etc.
  • The colonists react by boycotting British goods
  • Some of these people began to be known as the
    Sons of Liberty
  • The Stamp Act was eventually repealed by the
    British

Declaratory Acts
  • The Declaratory Acts stated that British
    Parliament had full authority to make laws over
    all the people of the colonies
  • Following this Parliament passed the Townshend
    Acts

Townshend Acts
  • Placed import taxes on common items such as
    glass, lead and tea.
  • Colonist opposed this tax and this led to the
    Boston Massacre
  • Eventually the British repealed parts of the
    Townshend Acts

Tea Act
  • This Act placed high taxes on tea, and gave the
    British a monopoly on all tea in the colonies
  • The colonists reacted with the Boston Tea Party
  • Intolerable/Cruelty Acts were a response to the
    tea party and closed the port of Boston and
    required people to quarter soldiers that were
    watching over them
