Why is it important to teach Higher Order
Thinking Skills?
  • The purpose of utilizing higher order thinking
    skills is to enable the kind of thinking that is
    transferable from curriculum to curriculum,
    subject to subject and all the way into life.

Why do we struggle with H.O.T. questions?
  • Students experiences and language/vocabulary
    background result in different levels of
    participation in higher order thinking tasks
  • All children can perform on a higher level, but
    may need more exposure to types of questioning
    techniques

How can you make a simple task H.O.T?
  • Example How could you direct a student to put a
    book away in a designated place in the room using
    higher order thinking questions?

  • One of the simplest and easiest ways to develop
    kids thinking skills is by learning to word
    questions in the right way
  • Human thinking-skills are broken down in six/five
    categories

  • Ask questions that require more than one right
    answer avoid closed questions
  • Invite students to construct questions for an
    assignment collaboratively or individually
