  • Humans share needs with all other humans, but we
    fulfill them in unique ways.
  • The ways you fulfill your needs affect your
thoughts and behaviors and therefore your
    personality.
  • Abraham Maslow (noted psychiatrist)
  • - arranged needs in order of their priorities
  • - explained the influence of human needs on
    personality

Human Needs
4
Physical Needs
  • Have first priority and demand your primary
    consideration.
  • These needs are food, water, shelter, clothing,
sleep, and to some extent, sex.
  • Fulfillment is necessary for good health, a state
of well-being, and the continuation of life.

5
Safety and Security
  • Humans need to feel safe from physical danger and
secure in daily routine, so you know what to
    expect from life.
  • When you have satisfied these needs, you have the
courage to experience more of life and to expand
    your personality.
  • If your life centers on protecting yourself, you
personality has little chance to develop.

6
Love and Acceptance
  • Humans need to feel needed and accepted by
    others.
  • Your relationship with your friends and family
    should be secure.
  • Your friends and family help you to develop a
    healthy personality.

7
Esteem
  • In addition to love and acceptance, you need
    esteem (respect and admiration).
  • You must respect yourself before you can expect
    others to respect you.
  • Friends and family can help you establish self
    esteem.
  • After completing this stage, you now have the
confidence to strive for achievement and
    independence.

8
Self-Actualization
  • Realization of full potential.
  • Combine concern for self with concern for others
and for society as a whole.
  • Strive to be the very best you can be.
  • Believe in yourself.
  • When self-actualization is complete, you believe
in yourself and your personality is fully
    developed.
  • When all five stages are complete, you are even
more interested in improving yourself and
striving to become a better person.
