3Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes
surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It can be
viral or bacterial. Viral meningitis is more
common and resolves without any specific
treatment.
4Bacterial meningitis,is less prevalent but is
more serious and even possibly life threatening
if not treated promptly with antibiotics. The
onset of the virus can come very quickly and must
be diagnosed and treated before it can progress
anymore.
5Meningitis Symptoms
- Headache
- Drowsiness
- -Seizures
- -High temperatures
- -Joint pain
- -Stiff neck
- Vomiting
- -Dislike of light
6How do you treat Meningitis?
Antibiotics are used to treat the bacterial form
of Meningitis. The medication is also prescribed
for immediate family members and very close
contacts of the person with the Meningococcal
Strain. Antibiotics are not used to treat the
viral form of Meningitis
7Can anything be done to prevent the spread of
Meningitis?
No, Besides vaccines there are no other known
ways to protect against Meningitis. The only
people who are at high risk of contracting it are
close household contacts of the patient.
8One of the causes of Bacterial Meningitis is
Staphylococcus Pneumoniae.
9Roughly 2,800 Americans are affected by
Meningitis every year, and between 125-175 of
these are college students.
