1000 Dollar Challenge
  • As a concluding activity, groups will present to
    the class a plan that justifies how they would
    donate 1,000 to one or several non-governmental
    organizations (NGOs) that, in their or their
    groups opinion, would have the greatest impact
    for improving the quality of life / protect human
    rights/promoting sustainability in the world.

  • The presentation can take the form of a
    PowerPoint Presentation, Video Analysis, Oral
    Presentation, or a Display Board.
  • Your choice of NGO would celebrate the most
    effective way to help people improve their
    quality of life and / or how they would ensure
    the protection of human rights in a positive and
    respectful way.

1000 Challenge Continued
  • Once the presentations have been completed
  • the class will determine, by consensus, the
    classes top project.
  • The class will work on improving the project so
    that it maximizes the effectiveness of using
    1000.
  • Each class will present their projects to a panel
    of judges (investors) to determine Ross
    Sheppards best project and will award that
    project 1000 to put that plan into action.

Effective NGOs
  • How will an effective NGO be determined?
  • The effectiveness of an NGO will be determined
    through a class discussion on how you would
    measure an effective NGO which will begin to set
    the criteria for an effective NGO .
  • Things to think about - Funding to
    administration costs ratio ( to cause vs to
    personnel), policy ethics, client needs, quality
    of programs, dishonesty of receiver society,
    quality of personneletc.

Process
  • Research time is given to the students to
    formulate their justification to support their
    chosen NGO and prepare presentation.
  • This will include classroom time to determine
    criteria, research time on NGOs and project time
    to put presentations together.

    talents and your determination to put your plan
    into action the opportunities are available

Steps of the Project
  • Class Discussion of NGOs and Criteria Set to
    determine effective NGOs. Class 1
  • Review of evaluation. Class 1
  • Get into groups and determine the focus of your
    project. Class 1
  • Research and investigation into specific NGOs.
    Classes 2 and 3
  • Develop presentation. Classes 3 and 4
  • Present your groups 1000 challenge.
