Linking Classroom Assessment to the MAP
Communication Arts Test
  • Brian Hubbard, Curriculum and Instruction Acct.
    Asst.

2
The Importance of Cold Literature
  • When students take the MAP, they are answering
questions about literature that they must read,
comprehend and interpret on their own.
  • Students must be given opportunities to do this
    in the classroom.
  • This is the only way you can truly assess a
    students performance.
  • Lets look at an example.

3
I teach The Gift of the Magi
  • During class discussion we go over the different
types of irony and discuss the examples of irony
    in the story.
  • On the assessment, I have this question
Explain what irony is, using an example from The
    Gift of the Magi.

4
The Objective
  • My objective is
  • Students will identify and analyze the use of
    irony in literature.
  • My objective is not
  • Students will know the examples of irony that can
be found in The Gift of the Magi.

5
  • Today, you will write at least one assessment
item to a cold reading passage.
  • Your item will be aligned to R3C.
  • Before we begin, discuss R3C at your table.
  • Next, take a few minutes to read your passage.

6
Write an assessment item!
  • Remember, your item should be aligned to R3C.
  • Use the Content Standard Interpretations to help
    you with ideas.
  • To do this, you will have to determine which
parts of R3C you want to assess and which
    process standards align.
  • Use the released items for models of items and
scoring guides YES! Your items will also need a
    scoring guide!

7
Tips from Scoring the MAPGeneral issues related
to correctly and completely answering constructed
response questions.
8
Reasons responses get 1s rather than 2s.
  • The response includes vague generalities rather
    than details and/or examples.
  • The response includes fewer correct
    details/examples/reasons than the item requires.

Lets look at some examples.
9
The response includes vague generalities rather
than details and/or examples.
  • Released Item (H.S. 2003)
  • How can the reader judge whether or not Carmen
Mariano is a reliable source of information on
the subject of success at Quincy College?
Support your answer with details/examples from
    the speech.
  • I believe that Carmen Mariano is a reliable
source because he gives information and examples
to back up what he is saying in his speech.

10
2 Point Response
  • He sounds confident when sayingPower believed is
power achieved, and he gives examples of other
great people and their words (Winston Churchill).
He gave the example of the 1 mile in 4 minutes
story. He sounds more than reliable and like a
    smart man himself and educated.

the subject of success at Quincy College?
Support your answer with details/examples from
    the speech.
  • In the beginning of the speech it explains about
Quincy. Plus Carmon seems to feel strongly on
the subject so I think he is reliable.

17
Dont forget about instruction!
  • If we are going to assess differently, our
instructions must change as well. We need to
    provide instructional opportunities for students
    to perform at higher levels.
