1
Who Should I Vote For? Seven Rules For
Christian Voters
  • Mark Elrod
  • Face the Issues Class
  • September 30, 2007

2
Seven Rules For Christian Voters
  • Why Seven Rules?
  • I was looking for a Biblical number
  • Three (3) seemed like too few
  • Ten (10) sounded too much like commandments
  • Twelve (12) would make the class too long
  • Six-hundred sixty-six (666) was out of the
    question
  • One-hundred forty-four thousand (144,000) would
    require too many slides

3
Seven Rules For Christian Voters
  • Rule 1
  • Dont Listen to Mark Elrod
  • Today may be an exception (its a paradox)
  • Rule 2
  • Its Okay to Not Care About Voting
  • Apolitical people have rights too
  • Voting none of the above is an option
  • And it makes my vote count more (thanks!)

4
Seven Rules For Christian Voters
  • Rule 3
  • Know What Kind of Voter You Are
  • Rational Voters (measure costs and benefits)
  • Ideological Voters (use party labels)
  • Values Voter (varies)
  • Single-Issue Voter (anti-abortion\anti-war)

5
Seven Rules For Christian Voters
  • Rule 4
  • Learn to Distinguish Local Issues from National
    Issues
  • No matter what kind of voter you are, there is a
good chance that there is a difference
  • National Democrats\Republicans are not local
    Democrats\Republicans
  • Local politics gives voters a greater opportunity
to examine the character of candidates

6
Seven Rules For Christian Voters
  • Rule 5
  • Dont Make Voting a Spiritual Issue
  • Its not healthy for you and its not healthy for
    the Lords church
  • In essentials, unity in non-essentials,
    liberty in all things, love.
  • Im going to spend the first 10,000 years in
heaven annoying all of the people who dont think
I should be there. Then, Im going to learn how
    to play the harp.

7
Seven Rules For Christian Voters
  • Rule 6
  • Political Pluralism Requires Compromise
  • Christians can be fairly uncompromising people
  • As a result, politics can be a frustrating
    experience
  • Sometimes, the ways of men are not the ways of
    God
  • In attempting to get the secular world to conform
to our values, we often end up conforming
    ourselves

8
Seven Rules For Christian Voters
  • Rule 7
  • Get Ready to Get Over It
  • Youll never get everything you want out of an
    election
  • At the end of the day, you still have battles to
wage that are far more important than who is
elected to the City Council, Congress or the
    White House
  • Pray that you will be at peace with the world and
    with other Christians.
